Sharing with you, a little of the history behind The Agra Restaurant.

Our Heritage

Established in 1954, the Agra Restaurant at 137 Whitfield Street, London W1T 5EL, is one of the

oldest Indian restaurants in Central London, proudly serving generations of guests for over seven

decades.

Located in the West End near Tottenham Court Road, The Agra was among the earliest Indian

restaurants in the area, helping to introduce Indian cuisine to London at a time when it was still

largely unfamiliar.

A Home for students and Professionals

During the 1950’s and 1960’s The Agra was surrounded by leading institutions including University

College London, UCH Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital and the London School of Economics, as

well as nearby student halls of residence.  Later, students from London’s polytechnics also

became regular visitors.

Students travelled from across the UK - Scotland, Wales, Manchester, Birmingham, the North,

and the Southern counties - and many discovered Indian food for the very first time, at the Agra.

From Student Favourite to Lifelong Tradition

The Agra quickly became a favourite among junior and trainee doctors, student barristers, trainee

solicitors, architects, engineers and other young professionals. Many of those who dined with us

in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s still return today - now as professionals or retirees, sharing memories

of their student days, when a hearty meal cost just two shillings and sixpence. Those were the

days!!!!!

Helping Shape Britain’s Love for Indian Food

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, Indian spices and curries were not widely known in the UK.

Students came to The Agra for its generous portions, quick service, bold flavours, and

affordable prices.

As these students returned to their hometowns, their love for Indian cuisine spread across the

country. Over time, this growing demand contributed to the establishment of many Indian and

Bangladeshi restaurants throughout the UK, helping Indian food become one of Britain’s most

loved cuisines.

Still Here, Still Proud

We are truly blessed to still be here today and proud to carry forward this remarkable legacy; a

milestone built on tradition, community, and a shared love of great food.

We look forward to sharing more updates about The Agra Restaurant’s history with you in the coming months.
